Saw in T.

Glad to see people are still out there riding regardless of the crummy weather we've had lately. I found this bike at Ryerson University. I try to take note of what bikes are around (I've seen a Fuji track bike or 2, 3 Masi and a few conversions) and this one seems new to me.

First Winter Ride & New Lens

It began snowing Wednesday afternoon and I did not notice until I left my department in the evening. It wasn't too heavy so I decided to try and commute home on my fixed gear. I took it slow at first since it was my first winter commute home (and no a fixed gear bike, no less) and it wasn't too bad, I had cycling tights under my clothes so I was all bundled up. At one red light I decided to start off by pedalling out of the saddle but quickly learned that having no weight no the rear means no traction on the rear! The rest of the 7km ride wasn't bad at all, that is, until I was at the last turn, just a few meters away from my apartment. I took the turn too sharply and my front wheel slipped right under me. I slid on the ground and did a slight roll landing on my left hip and head first. Aside from being covered in snow and the slight headache I was fine (Thank God for helmets). I think I will switch to my single-speed mountain bike for now until I get tyres that are winter worthy (Unlike my 700x23 contis).

I found an old lens on Craigslist for $20 and couldn't help but pick it up. It's entirely manual so it is tricky to use sometimes but I'm getting the hang of it.

This is a TX Quando fixed-fixed hub with a 16t track cog. I also tossed in a 14t and 15t single speed sprockets for a Shimano freewheel.

One 'excuse' a lot of people have told me as to why they don't bike to work is that they can't bike in their work clothes. Normally I just bring a change of clothes or wear my cycling clothes underneath. But there are some people that will wear their suits and get around just fine. Of course, sometimes wearing a jacket on top helps too.

My Bike

Taking photos of other bikes is great but I completely forgot to get a shot of my own fleet. Today's photo is of my fixed gear commuter:



-KHS Flite 100 (2008)
-53cm Reynolds 520 double butted frame
-Weimann SP17 rims on no-name flip-flop hubs
-48t FSA Vero crankset x 19t cog

It was bought at Urbane Cyclist (www.ucycle.com), swapped the track bars for flats (red ones I found at the bike show for $10), rear cog for a more comfortable ratio, KMC single speed chain (In red) and random road pedals with MKS cages. I rode around on a single-speed hack for a while and when I sold it I decided to go for a fixed gear bike to see what the craze is all about. Still haven't figured that part out yet.

I also have a single speed rigid MTB which I will post at a later date.

I was quite surprised to see this bike today as I actually worked on this bike at a free bicycle clinic at Ryerson University. I love coaster-brakes and I love the red chain.
I found this unique little thing on the corner of College & University Ave. today, talk about pimping things up DIY!

Bike Watching

There are two things I love, cycling and photography, so I said to myself 'Hey, why not combine the two together?' it usually works: chocolate & peanuts, nutella & chocolate, fries & Wendy's frosties, potato wedges & sour cream, ice cream & cheese pizza, I could go on! So from now on, whenever I see something I like and I have my camera I will take a photo of it.

If I see it and I like it I'll photograph it, whether it's road, cross country, track, a vintage 10-speeder, anything! Expect more, lots more.

Rain, Rain, Go Away...

...or not...

I just built my single-speed mountain bike which will serve as my winter-weather & off road fun bike. Unfortunately, I forgot the most vital component of the bike: fenders. My inaugural ride was a 7km commute from my apartment to campus and it just so happened to be raining. My Avid BB7 brakes and knobbie 26x1.95 tyres made short work of whatever the wretched weather threw at me and my cold weather tights & jacket kept me warm, but puddles and mud turned my brisk ride into a terrible commute. I arrived on campus with wet socks, shoes and pants (The tights kept me warm but my outer layer which, was a pair of jeans, did not fair well) and specs of mud on my face & glasses.

I love riding in the rain, I really do! It's great to ride while people duck for cover or stand idly with their bikes under archways, but I need fenders on this bike! I plan to hit MEC tonight or tomorrow to get some.
